Interpersonal Communications
  • This semester-long elective course will focus on the roles in which communication plays in everyone’s life and why a thorough understanding of communication is so important. Students will be asked to reflect on personal experiences and to think of themselves in relation to important situations requiring various communication methods. This course will include a variety of activities to illustrate self-concept, building relationships on multiple levels, making contact, and reaching out in everyday interactions. Through this process, students should be able to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses as communicators at all levels: interpersonal, group, and public.

Grading

When you log on to Skyward, you will see assignments posted in the categories listed below. Here is a brief description of what each of these includes and their weight on the student’s overall semester grade.  Semester grades will be calculated by weighting the grade earned during each quarter at 40% and the semester exam at 20% for a total of 100%.

A major component of the material will be through activities and group interactions. Therefore, class participation is worth a major part of the final grade. Other grades will be based on chapter quizzes, unit tests, film-viewing quizzes, various Hands-on assignments from each chapter, and a few speaking presentations.

Class Participation 20%

With the specific nature of this class, it is not only necessary, but also essential that each student participate in these activities to gain a better understanding of the communication process. Each chapter will feature guiding essential questions and students will be required to participate in discussion and application of each chapter’s content to their own experiences.

Daily Assignment 10%

With each chapter’s focus, there will be various hands-on assignments that encourage to apply the skills to personal experiences and/or engage in new ways of communicating. These are meant to be          completed outside of class and should help students practice and reinforce new skills.

Projects 15%

Throughout the semester, there will be various assignments designed around various interpersonal concepts. These projects are designed to creatively engage the students to think about various communications methods, self-concept, and analysis of films.

Quiz 25 %

At the end of each chapter from the textbook, the students will be assessed on the vocabulary and interpersonal terms that we have identified, practiced, and   applied to their relationships. These objective quizzes will measure how well the students mastered the chapter’s concepts. There will    also be various quizzes based on the films viewed in class dealing with the concepts we have covered in the chapters.

Unit Test 30%

The textbook chapters are organized into core units that deal with the focused communication skills. At the end of each unit, students will be assessed using primarily multiple choice, objective tests that ask students to identify and apply the previously mastered concepts.
