Algebra I

Algebra I Course Syllabus

2017-18

Mr. Joseph E. O’Neil

General Information

Algebra I is the entry level math class for most freshmen at Jacksonville High School.  The course description can be found on the school website.  Successful completion of this course is a requirement for high school graduation.  Topics covered will be used in both Geometry and Algebra II, which are also required future courses.

Classwork/Homework

Much of what we will learn can and will be covered in class.  Homework is a very minimal part of a student’s grade.  A majority of a student’s grade comes from assessments, (i.e. quizzes and tests).  In order to be successful in class, a student needs to be successful on assessments and be able to demonstrate that he/she has mastered the concepts taught in the various units.  Daily work can be found on my page on the school website.

Grading

100% - 90%  A

89% - 80%  B

79% - 70%  C

69% - 60%  D

59% - 0%  F

Semester grade is calculated by the following:

Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 = 80%

Semester Final = 20%

When going over grades with students, it is important to understand to not just be concerned with your midterm or quarter grade.  The semester grade is ultimately the grade that determines whether the student has gained credit for the semester and will be able to move on to future courses.  Also, it is important to remember that certain electives require that students have earned certain grades in previously taken courses.

Materials

In order to participate in class, students need to have the following materials for class:

Something to write with

A 2 pocket folder

All of our notes and assignments are reproduced.  We will not use books, so do not be concerned it your child does not have a book for this class.

Class Rules

  • Come to class prepared and on time

  • Raise hand to speak or ask permission to get out of seat

  • Food or drink is allowed but will be taken away if it becomes a distraction to the learning environment

  • Respect one another both verbally and physically

Success

Success in classes I have taught is dependant on one thing; a student’s willingness to participate in class, do the work and demonstrate a want to better themselves.  In 21 years, I have never had a student fail or not be successful that tried.  I will be your child’s best advocate and will do all I can to help them succeed, but it is equally important that your child put the effort in also.  I am reachable here at JHS and am attaching my contact information.  You can also find contact information on my webpage on the school website.  Please do not hesitate to call/email me any concerns you have.  I look forward to working with your child this school year.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. O’Neil
