This course is designed for the student who has little or no German experience. By the end of the course, the student will be able to participate in and understand elementary expressions with commonly used German vocabulary. Also, the student will be introduced to basic concepts of grammar. This course focuses on the introduction to reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Classroom presentations and textual materials are used to expose the student to aspects of German culture. Materials include the basic text, workbook, recordings, an interactive CD program, and teacher-prepared handouts and transparencies.

Year


Recommendation: A passing grade in 222 with a "C" or better average


This course begins to immerse students in the target language that begins with a review of the grammar and vocabulary studied in German I. The study of German grammar and vocabulary continues, as does the study of the culture of German-speaking societies. Listening, speaking and writing skills are emphasized with practice in reading as well. Workbooks, recordings, films, a CD program, and videos supplement the basic text. At the end of the first semester of German II, qualified students become eligible for membership in the Delta Epsilon Phi if students have completed three semesters of German at the high school level.

In this level, the student will review the basic grammar already covered in the first two levels and explore some of the finer points of grammar. Emphasis on listening and speaking skills, with a goal of using no English on the part of the student, allows for a greater degree of self-expression. As a part of the culture, the student will be introduced to various types of literature. In addition to the basic text, course materials include a workbook, audio-visual media, and other readings. Students are required to keep a diary first semester and do a research project in German second semester. Students who did not previously qualify for Delta Epsilon Phi may do so during this course.

This course is aimed to be conducted entirely in German. Following suggested AP guidelines, the emphasis is on improvement of reading, listening, advanced writing and oral communication. Germanic culture is explored in detail through exposure to the literature, history and art of German-speaking peoples. Students are required to keep a diary in German. Oral presentations and some independent projects, as well as a student research portfolio, are required. In addition, students write expository, narrative and persuasive paragraphs and compositions, as well as poems. For that reason, this course qualifies as an intensive writing course. Materials include recordings, readers and teacher-prepared handouts. Students who did not previously qualify for Delta Epsilon Phi may do so during this course.

Conducted entirely in Spanish, this course is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement exam in Spanish language. In this course, the student develops language skills that can be useful in a variety of situations. Oral skills, composition and grammar are stressed with culture being presented in such a way as to reinforce those skills. In addition, students write expository, narrative and persuasive paragraphs and compositions, as well as poems. For that reason, this course qualifies as an intensive writing course. Course content can include the arts, history, current events and literature. Materials may include recordings, films, newspapers, and magazines. Students are required to keep a diary in Spanish and prepare a research portfolio. Students who did not qualify for Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica may do so during this course.

American Sign Language I

Prerequisite: Entry Level; available only to sophomores, juniors, seniors

By the end of this course, the student will be able to participate in and understand elementary expressions with commonly used ASL vocabulary including finger spelling, signed words, and gestures. The student will also be introduced to Deaf culture and will be expected to participate in various types of activities. Materials include textbook, workbook, tapes, DVDs, videotaping, field trips, and teacher-prepared handouts. This class may not count toward foreign language requirements at some colleges.

American Sign Language II

This course begins with a review of the grammar and vocabulary studied in ASL I, as well as, focusing on increasingly complex concepts of ASL grammar structure and vocabulary. Comprehension goals for students may include attaining more facility and faster understanding when viewing the language signed at normal rates and conversing easily within limited situations. Activities planned involving Deaf people and Deaf culture will continue throughout this course. Classroom participation is required. Materials include workbooks, videotaping, videos, DVDs, guest speakers, and field trips that will be supplemented by the basic text. Various projects and activities out of the classroom will be required.

American Sign Language III

Recommendation: A passing grade in 298 with a "C" or better average


American Sign Language III focuses on advancing students' skills and abilities to sign and understand the language so that they can maintain simple conversations with sufficient vocabulary within an acceptable pace and have sufficient comprehension skills to understand the language when signed at a normal rate. Students must be able to provide their own transportation on potential scheduled days during the week to go to ISD for immersed communicational experiences. A weekly journal is required for this experience. They will also be engaged in classroom activities revolved around extensive fingerspelling and number practices. Materials include workbooks, videotaping, videos, DVDs, guest speakers, and teacher-prepared materials. A fee may be required for this course.
