Foods I

This course includes basic classroom and laboratory experiences needed to develop knowledge and understanding of basic food principles and applied nutrition. The course content centers on the following areas: promoting food service and preparation management; meeting health and safety needs in planning, preparing and serving food; and promoting hospitality in food practices. Information related to careers in foods and nutrition is incorporated throughout the course.

Semester


Recommendation: A passing grade in 604 with a "C" or better average


In this second-level foods course, more attention is paid to food selection and preparation for special circumstances and dietary needs. Laboratory sessions are devoted to preparation of foods with advanced concepts. Nutrition concepts are more advanced as well. This course provides an introduction to commercial food service, preparation, and management.

Clothing I

This basic course in textiles and clothing includes classroom and laboratory experiences to provide students with knowledge and understanding to help meet the clothing needs of the students. Included are experiences related to technology, garment construction, evaluating the quality of clothing products, understanding of terminology related to the field, and care of clothing and textile products. Information related to careers in clothing is incorporated within the course. There is a $15 fee for this course. A minimum of two sewing projects is required. Supplies for projects such as patterns, fabrics and sewing notions are also required. Estimated cost is $25.

This course includes classroom and laboratory experience in the study of clothing needs and the factors influencing clothing choices. Garments are constructed which give additional practice in the basic sewing techniques and more advanced sewing techniques. Individualized instruction allows students to select projects suited to their experiences and to work at their own speed. A minimum of two sewing projects is required. Supplies for projects such as patterns, fabrics and sewing notions are also required. Estimated cost is $35.

This course emphasizes learning experiences which help students gain knowledge and understanding of the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of children from birth through age six. The course content should center on the following duty areas: promoting child development by applying physical, social, intellectual and emotional principles; and practicing health and safety standards for children. Information related to careers in child care is incorporated within the course.

Child Care includes personal career information about child care occupations and teaches knowledge and skills to enable students to assist in a child care facility. This course is an excellent preparatory course for higher education in the child care field.

Recommendation: A passing grade in 616 with a "C" or better average


Child Care Experience enables students to apply the knowledge and skills learned in previous related courses. Students will need to provide their own transportation to travel off-campus to participate in appropriate child care settings. Students will assist teachers at various sites. This course is an excellent preparatory course for higher education in the child care field. Excessive absences will result in a conference with teacher and administrator and could lead to removal from the program.

Parenting

Prerequisite: Entry Level; Open to Juniors and Seniors only

Semester

This course is designed to help students understand the responsibilities, satisfactions and stresses of parenthood. Many types of parenting situations are examined. The course content includes the following: goal-setting skills; applying the basic principles of the parenting process; practicing health and safety standards; providing experiences which encourage parents to maximize growth and development in their children; and evaluating the impact of family and career changes on parenting.  Students will be given the opportunity to practice real life parenting by caring for infant simulators.  This hands on learning experience will take place over several evenings.

Adult Living

This course is designed to assist individuals and families in achieving life satisfaction through responsible participation as adults in the home, community and work place. Emphasis is placed on the development of prevention strategies that will assist individuals in responding to situations in terms of the identified values and goals. The course content includes the following duty areas: developing short and long-range plans; demonstrating goal-setting and decision-making skills; evaluating and adapting basic needs to assume roles and responsibilities; and developing effective relationships to promote communication with others.
